Let’s talk about equal rights

On January 27, I was privileged enough to take part in a virtual town hall conversation. The topic being discussed was the Equal Rights Amendment and how, even in the United States, equal protections for women do not have a constitutional guarantee. Even in 2021. Even following the #MeToo movement. Even despite not only significant public support but also widespread belief that the ERA – or, at least, its provision of equal protections of the basis of sex – was already on an existence.

Women are not guaranteed equal protections under the Constitution, and this fact creates social disparities that we, as a society, need to remedy. However, when there is an intersection between sex and a demographic characteristic like disability, these social disparities are significantly exacerbated.

In this town hall conversation, hosted by Carol Jenkins and moderated by Tatiana Lee, I was fortunate to be joined by Marc Dubin, Ryan Haddad, and Maysoon Zayid. The conversation was as important as it was wide-ranging, and we talked about ideas far too rarely discussed in any circles. But, they need to be. Disability demands a bigger and more-present seat at the table. At every table. In every conversation. Please, check out the YouTube recording of the town hall, below:
