Power List
The Year’s 50 Most Influential People
What is power, anyway? Well, it can range from getting a piece
of legislation passed, or a building permit approved, enriching
people's lives, or making a phone call and getting Yankees
tickets behind the dugout 10 minutes before game time. It's
probably safe to say that most, if not all, of the people on
this year's Power List can get at least one of those things
done.
Deciding who makes it on the list is not an easy process. There
is plenty of debate, foot stomping and hair pulling. But when
everyone is separated and discussion resumes, eventually there
is a consensus that this list is a solid representation of LI's
power players.
The list is not compiled by net worth. The only prerequisite is
living right here on LI. We have people from the arts, titans of
industry, elected officials and community activists. In many
cases, you can assume that one person is representative of
others like him or her, with the same goals, energies and focus
that comprise the fabric of LI. Some may have moved down on the
list, but that is not necessarily because of a decrease in
power, but rather to allow for new people to appear. Some,
hopefully, have a sense of humor. So, without further ado, we
present the 2006 Long Island Press 50 Most Powerful Long
Islanders.
31. Brooke Ellison

State Senate Democratic Candidate
Already a compelling speaker and Harvard grad, Ellison has taken
her career to the next level. She's currently on Home
trail, eager for a seat in the State Senate. Paralyzed from the
neck down after being hit by a car in 1990, the Setauket
resident is an advocate for stem cell research, as well as
housing opportunities, educational funding and feasible
transportation solutions.
